Spring Cleaning Blues

A new season's approaching which means another batch of jdoramas will be gracing the small screen and yet I don't even remember catching any of the ones that came out earlier this year. Can't really say I'm excited about the upcoming dramas because blurbs tend to be misleading and as experience would show, watching a drama on the basis of who's in it doesn't always do the trick. So I've decided to lower my expectations and watch things at my own pace, let all the hype and hoopla die down, before attempting to review whatever I've seen in earnest. I can no longer afford to watch anything and everything like I used to, in fact, I find it increasingly hard to motivate myself to sit through any drama just for the sake of watching a drama.

Gone are the days when I'd stay up till the wee hours of the morning just to finish a series. It's actually reached the point wherein unless the drama's exceptionally good, I would normally go, "Screw it, this thing can wait. I better head to bed lest I sleep through it." Five years ago, it would have been unthinkable for me to start watching something and not finish it, but given how one's priorities change as one grows older, finding out about how the chaebol heir and the long lost princess got together in My Princess falls way below my list of concerns. Why would anyone want to reinstate a constitutional monarchy in this day and age anyway? And in Baker King, why would a matriarch of a grand family allow her son to impregnate a servant just to get a grandson when she has two fine granddaughters who can inherit the company? I can't tell for sure if Asian dramas have declined in quality or maybe I've seen way too many of them and have become a cranky old lady, but I can't ignore little things that tend to offend my sensibilities, not to mention the weird casting choices and ill-conceived scenarios that make up half of the jdorama line-up every year.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I haven't seen anything particularly good lately and real life commitments will be taking up most of my time considering I have a paper to revise and some more studying to accomplish. For now all I can offer you is an updated list of the dramas that I have for disposal. Just send me an email if there's anything to your liking.

  1. Hmmm...I totally understand your problem because I've started to stop watching new doramas completely now. There's nothing new catching my eye at all =/

Good luck in your studies! I gotta go back to exam prep too

  2. Yeah, I know what you mean. A while back, I'd be following a few dramas while they're airing, nowadays, I just wait for the whole thing to finish before even attempting to watch it.

Good luck with the exam prep work. I've been meaning to post a comment on the AKB48 live performance review you did a while back but I haven't gotten around to watching the whole thing. I think I still have about 4-5 clips to go--major props to you for fairly scrutinizing each number. :)

  3. I totally understand where you're coming from. Work is crazy and let's not talk about my current family health problems. Truth be told, so many dramas anymore get on my nerves and I find it hard to keep watching (probably why my recapping has fallen so far behind).

I remember that for the winter season, I was looking at dramas going that not even the summaries could entice me to watch.

Good luck with your paper. Oddly enough, I actually miss papers. I always had fun writing them (well, most of them). Guess that's why I was an English writing major. :P

  4. Ditto on the part about how so many dramas get on your nerves. LOL. Can't help but stop watching especially when there are more pressing matters to attend to. I wasn't all that crazy about the dramas last winter either. I have a few of them stewing in my hard drive but I haven't managed to watch any of them.

Good luck with recapping. I find that people do look forward to recaps more than reviews. I'm sure you'll find a way to get them back on track. Btw, have I mentioned how I'm totally jealous of the fact that you have contributors for your blog? Must be awesome to have someone to post stuff when you're too busy to blog. :)

  5. I've got quite a few stewing on my hard drive, too. :P Oh well. They will get watched eventually...

I have noticed that people really like recaps, since I am over a year behind on some, I have thought about dropping them completely, but have decided to give it a go and just take things slowly

I talked my friend into contributing :) She tries to get a post in weekly, but doesn't always get around to it, which is ok as I know she is busy, too. My other friend is supposed to start contributing as well, but she has this first post fear :P
